Introduction Rahim has said- ‘Rahiman, keep water, without water everything is useless. When water is lost, money is not left, pearl, manus, lime.
In this couplet, the poet has presented the importance of ‘water’. Life cannot be imagined without water. Water is of special importance among all natural resources. Most of Rajasthan is a desert, where there is no water even in name.Due to this, the residents here have to live a miserable life. If there is no rain, there is a severe famine here and life becomes almost impossible. There is a lack of trees that attract rain. Whatever little is available is being cut indiscriminately. Hence, the water crisis in Rajasthan is deepening day by day.
due to water crisis
There is no special water source in the eastern part of Rajasthan except Chambal and Mahi in the southern part, which can fulfill the water requirements. The western part is a waterless area full of sand dunes, where Indira Gandhi Canal is the only shelter. Some of the main reasons for water crisis in Rajasthan are as follows-
(i) Groundwater is being exploited at a rapid pace. (ii) The crisis is deepening due to the use of drinking water sources for irrigation. (iii) Supply of water to industries is also causing trouble to the common people. (iv) The non-cooperative attitude of neighbouring states like Punjab, Haryana etc. is also a major reason for the water crisis.(v) The natural structure of Rajasthan is such that there is lack of rainfall here.
Preventive measures-
Efforts should be made on war footing to prevent water crisis in Rajasthan, otherwise a serious crisis may arise here. Some important suggestions are as follows-
(i) Unlimited exploitation of groundwater should be stopped. (ii) Drinking water sources should not be used for irrigation. (iii) Small dams should be constructed to stop rain water.(iv) Necessary quantity of water should be obtained by maintaining friendly relations with the governments of Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh. (v) Ponds, pools, wells etc. should be developed in villages and they should be provided protection. (vi) Special attention should be paid to tree plantation in the desert.(vii) Water level is also falling due to mining work, so attention needs to be paid to this as well. (viii) Measures should be taken to conserve rainwater by growing trees on mountains and making anicuts at various places. (ix) Groundwater should be recharged by making pits on every farm so that groundwater can be used for drinking water and irrigation.
Due to its natural structure, Rajasthan has always been suffering from water crisis. But human negligence has made this crisis even more terrible. The unprecedented floods in Rajasthan in the past years have confused the experts of water managementIf that flood is an exception, then it is fine; but if it happens again, then water management will have to be reconsidered.
